The workshops will be held at the Clothworkers’ Centre for the Study and Conservation of Textiles and Fashion at Blythe House, near Kensington Olympia, West London and will start at 11.00 am and end at 5.00 pm to allow travel time to and from London.
Day 1; 19th April 2018: Exploring the components of woven cloth, including fibres, spinning, and the basics of weaving. Examples of different cloth types (eg, taffeta, satin, etc.) will be supplied and examples from the School of Textiles collection will be used to enhance the participants’ further understanding.
Day 2; 17th May 2018: A more advanced analysis of weave structures and cloth types (eg, brocade, jacquard and velvet). Examples from the School of Textiles collection will allow comparisons between similar fabrics to highlight the distinguishing characteristics of each type.
While the workshops are complimentary they will also function as stand-alone sessions with Day 1 introductory and Day 2 more advanced. There are 18 places available for each workshop and they are free to DATS members. In order to keep costs down refreshments will not be provided; however, there are a good range of sandwich shops, cafés and restaurants near to Blythe House.
If you would like to attend one or both workshops please contact Suzanne Smith s.smith@vam.ac.uk by 28th February 2018.
If travelling to London is prohibitive please let us know your preferred region for future workshops.
